Four score and seven years ago, our fathers brought forth upon this continent a new nation, conceived in liberty and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal.



Now we are engaged in a great civil war, testing whether that nation or any nation so conceived and so dedicated can long endure. We are met on a great battlefield of that war.


We have come to dedicate a portion of that field as a final resting place for those who here gave their lives that this nation might live. It is altogether fitting and proper that we should do this.



But, an a larger sense, we cannot dedicate, we cannot consecrate, we cannot hallow this ground. The brave men, living and dead, who struggled here have consecrated it, far above our poor power to add or detract. The world will little note, nor long remember, what we say here, but it can never forget what they did here.


It is for us the living, rather, to be dedicated here to the unfinished work which they who fought here have thus far so nobly advanced. It is rather for us to be here dedicated to the great task remaining before us, that from these honored dead we take increased devotion to that cause for which they gave the last full measure of devotion, that we here highly resolve that these dead shall not have died in vain, that this nation, under God, shall have a new birth of freedom, and that government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the earth.

87년전 우리의 조상들은 자유의 깃발 아래 모든 인간은 태어나면서부터 평등하다는 전제에 헌신하기 위해 이 대륙에 새로운 나라를 건설했습니다.

오늘 우리는 즉, 이렇게 탄생한 한 나라가 오래도록 존속될 수 있는지를 시험하는 큰 내란을 겪고 있습니다. 우리는 오늘 그 전쟁이 벌어졌던 위대한 한 싸움터에 모였습니다.

우리는 이 나라가 존속될 수 있도록 자신의 목숨을 바친 사람들을 위해 이 싸움터의 한 부분을 영원한 안식처로 바치기 위해서  이 자리에 왔습니다. 우리가 이렇게 해야 하는 것은 적절하고 합당한 일입니다.

그러나 더 큰 의미에서 우리는 이 땅을 바칠 수도, 신성하게 할 수도 없으며, 거룩하게 할 수도 없습니다. 죽었든 살아 남았든 이곳에서 싸운 용사들은 이 땅을 치장하거나 더럽힐 수 있는 우리의 하찮은 능력이 도달할 수 없을 만큼  이 땅을 이미 성스럽게 만들었습니다.  
세상은 우리가 이곳에서 하는 말에 별로 신경을 쓰지도 않을 것이고 오래도록 기억하지도 않을 것입니다. 그러나 사람들은 그들이 여기에서 했던 일을 결코 잊을 수 없을 것입니다.

그러므로 여기서 싸운 사람들이 지금까지 그토록 고귀하게 이룩해 놓은 그 미완성의 작업에 헌신하는 일은 살아있는 우리의 몫입니다. 우리는 이들 영예롭게 죽은 용사들로부터 그들이 마지막으로 모든 것을 바쳤던 대의를 위해 더욱 더 몸을 바쳐야 할 과업을 떠 맡았습니다. 

우리는 이곳에서 그들의 죽음을 헛되지 않도록 하고, 또 신의 가호 아래 이 나라가 새롭게 탄생한 자유를 누리게 하고, 국민의, 국민에 의한, 국민을 위한 정부를 지구상에서 결코 사라지지 않게 할 것이라고 굳게 결의하는 바입니다.
